Work with us

The Tributary is a startup nonprofit, nonpartisan outlet investigating Jacksonville’s entrenched problems, one topic at a time. We’re committed to doing the sort of in-depth, expensive investigations that local news often misses. We work in collaboration with existing local news outlets — print, radio, TV and digital. We don’t cover the everyday humdrum of breaking news. Instead, we prioritize stories that wouldn’t get told without us.

The Tributary is committed to the ideals of workplace democracy, governed by an independent Board of Directors. That means everyone participates in developing the organization’s budget, policies and compensation. All workers will collaboratively set the direction of the Tributary with the Board.

Our core values include diversity, equity and inclusivity. Practicing what we preach is essential to shaping a newsroom capable of reporting the kind of stories that are missing in our community. Northeast Florida is diverse, and a diversity of race, gender and other backgrounds enrich our journalism. Even if you don’t exactly meet the qualifications listed below, you may still be a candidate for this position. Please let us know how your skills, experience and background have prepared you for this role in your cover letter.

The Tributary is among the news organizations selected as a Report for America host
newsroom partner. Through this partnership, The Tributary will expand its coverage of poverty and Florida’s social safety net.

Report for America is a national service program that places journalists in local newsrooms to
report on undercovered issues and communities. It is an initiative of The GroundTruth Project, a
nonprofit media organization, and is structured to harness the skills and idealism of an
emerging group of journalists plus the creative spirit of local news organizations—like ours.
Report for America is a two-year program (with an option for three) that delivers a wide range
of benefits to its corps members. Beyond paying up to half of the journalists’ salaries, it
provides ongoing training and mentorship by leading journalists, peer networking, and
memberships to select professional organizations.
